With only 118 copies in existence, of which 108 copies are possessed by museums and libraries, Birds of America, authored by James Audubon widely considered to be the most expensive book in the world. Sold at a Sotheby’s auction, this fantastic collection of U.S natural history fetched an unbelievable $10 million. Birds of America was presented in a large folio that encased the life-size paintings of the birds found in America. The entire collection is comprised of paintings that were rendered by Mr. Audubon, from the photographs he took while crisscrossing across the United States. The Birds of America book was printed in black & white and was late hand colored, thus making it one of the most invaluable books of the modern times.
