After 18 movies, it’s difficult to imagine anyone else donning the capes and spandex to play our favourite Marvel superheroes
on the big screen.
From Robert Downey Jr. blurring the lines between reality and acting in his performance as Tony Stark/ Iron Man to the newest member of the Avengers, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s casting track-record has been pretty spot on.
While there’s not one actor among the cast of Avengers: Infinity War we’d switch out for another, it’s always fun to imagine ‘what if…’ when it comes to our favourite superheroes and who could have played them.
Here are 10 actors who dropped out, auditioned or were basically runner-up for various roles in Marvel Studios movies.
John Krasinski – Captain America
While it’s hard to picture anyone but Chris Evans playing Steve Rodgers, a number of actors were in the running to take on the lead role in Captain America: The First Avenger after Evans turned down the role six times before finally accepting.
While Marvel met with a number of people for the comic book character, one actor who came surprisingly close to nabbing the part was The Office star, John Krasinski.
Krasinski even made it as far as a costumed audition before he took himself out of the running due to a strange, albeit hilarious reason.
In an interview with Conan O’Brien in 2016, the A Quiet Place star revealed that he was stepping into Cap’s suit for the audition when, unexpectedly, Chris Hemsworth walked by in costume as Thor, making Krasinski realise that he didn’t have quite the right physique to take on the role.
“I went, ‘I’m good. This is stupid. That’s okay, I’m not Captain America,'” Krasinski joked.
